Dexter title sequences

  • What titles are shown?
The main title of 'Dexter' is shown straight away and is a blood themed title with the name of the programme to fit the narrative.
  • How do the titles fit into the narrative?
The titles fit into the storyline because they are a blood themed titles which reflects the storyline as the main characters is a blood splatter pattern analyst which shows the reason of the blood dripping and slipping into place to create the name 'Dexter'.
  • How is typography used?
There isn't much typography to talk about as there is only one title to talk about which is the main title that is written in blood. This is effective as blood is red and it represents danger and killing as blood and danger are present when killing takes place. This creates the scene of the show as it shows the audience to expect blood and murder which makes the title effective.
  • How is camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene used in the title sequence?
The camerawork in the morning sequence of 'Dexter', as see in the video above, is very effective. All of the shots are extreme close ups or close ups of the daily routine of the man. This shows the normality of the daily routine but shows the brutality as the close ups show. Take the orange being cut by a large knife which shows juice squirting out quite violently. This can show the character from this camerawork as it can suggest he's a normal character but may have more a violent side to him. Also with this comes the jump cuts which add to the tension and can suggest to the audience that the show may be jumpy at times.

The sound used is a rather normal, suburban sound which is the non-diegetic sound as it is the soundtrack. This can suggest the normality of the character and the everyday life routine but at times the music can change like when cutting the flesh, as seen in the video. The music tends to go a bit eerie and sinister which suggests the character may have a sinister part to him. The diegetic sound of the everyday routines seem to be emphasised and have more of a sharper sound to it. The shaving for example, this suggests a sharp and more violent sound of shaving which suggests the character is a violent character.

  • How does the sequence indicate genre and suggest narrative?
The sequence of 'Dexter' indicates the thriller genre as the sinister sounds that can be heard at times, like when cutting the flesh for example, shows the thriller genre. Also the dripping of blood and use of blood for the title shows the thriller genre as blood is a convention of thrillers and it is certainly emphasised in this sequence.
  • How does the sequence engage your interest?
This sequence is very effective and grabs my interest as it has a sense of mystery about it, this is effective as it is a convention of the thriller genre. It makes me want to watch on and see what happens and why there is such a mystery surrounding just an everyday routine.
