Question 3)
We
called our production company LMZ productions, the name is short for all the
names in our group; Liam, Matt and Zak. We used this name because we all played
our part in the production of the thriller we created and the use of all our
names in the production company showed a fair and equal acknowledgement of the
amount of work we put into this. The role of our production company is to
budget our thriller and make sure the creation of our thriller is possible.
A
production company is responsible for the development and filming of a film but
they do play a massive role in the production of the film. They are responsible
for many things, in particular the budget; they control the budget for the film
to ensure they use the amount given and required. They are also responsible for
the filming sequences, scheduling, scripting, everything that is part of the
production of a film. They are also responsible for finding a director that can
work for the specific genre they wish to work with and they should be
professional and adequate in choosing the correct director. This shows there
responsibility and importance in production and creating a film.
Paramount Pictures Corporation (commonly known as Paramount Pictures or simply Paramount, and formerly known as Famous Players-Lasky Corporation) is a film studio, television production company and motion picture distributor, consistently ranked as one of the "Big Six" film studios of Hollywood. It is a subsidiary of U.S. media conglomerate Viacom. Paramount is a member of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). It has distributed several successful film series. It's the world's fourth oldest continuously-operating major film studio, the third being Universal Studios, the 2 oldest being the French studios Gaumont Film Company and Pathé.
Films that Paramount pictures are involved in are films such as , Mission: Impossible, Marvel Cinematic Universe (2008–11), Indiana Jones (1981–2008), The Godfather, Star Trek, Jack Ryan, Jackass, The Bad News Bears, Beverly Hills Cop, Crocodile Dundee, Paranormal Activity, Friday the 13th and G.I. Joe. These are all films associated with thrillers and they distribute a number of large thriller films. This is why Paramount Pictures would be a good distributor to use as it can help promote and sell our thriller to a more global audience. I feel Paramount Pictures is appropriate to distribute our film because it is a well-known company that is known globally. This will help our film as we can promote our film in more countries due to the promotion and globalization of the company Paramount Pictures.
Obtaining funding for our thriller shouldn’t be too difficult or expensive as our distributor should be able to cover the cost of our thriller due to the little budget that is needed. For the making of our film we would only need a budget of around £250,000 due to the use of locations which can be used freely. Also the lighting wasn’t too difficult to sort out due to the location being in a rundown hut and around some woods. This created the low key lighting we craved so we didn’t have to obtain any special effects or do anything drastic to obtain the low key lighting we needed.
We used 3 titles in our opening sequence to show the 3 people who played there part in making and producing our thriller. The first person to come up on the titles was Matthew Johnson. We decided to have his title first due to the fact he played a big role in the film as he was directing and also doing a lot of the camera work. We chose Matt to be placed first as when researching other thriller opening sequences we found that the director came either at the start or at the end of the opening sequence. We took this into consideration and made sure Matt’s title was at the start, as it is in our production, to show professionalism and shows that we did our research.
Another titles we used and the next title that appear was ‘Starring Zak Munton’. I played an acting role within the film and although little snippets of the other actor Liam had been seen, my identity was first to be seen. This is why my title came before Liam’s as it shows sense to introduce my title when I am acting in the particular scene on the screen and my identity is about to be seen. I didn’t just star in the film I was also involved in the costume and ensuring I did the research into typical thriller’s costumes for killers and victims to ensure our production looked professional. I was also given the title of ‘Mise-en-scene director’ although we decided it wasn’t necessary to have that as a title in our production as when researching other thrillers we found this wasn’t a common title that was shown.
The final title we used for a person involved in the production was Liam’s title. We used his last as out of the two characters that were used Liam’s identity was the last to be given. We felt this was appropriate as we used the titles to reflect the introduction of character, which when doing our research was a notable theme used; to show the title of the action next or on the screen. Although Liam wasn’t also just part of the acting side of things as he played a major role in the creation of our music by working closely with a sound specialist to ensure our music was as good as it could possibly be. Liam worked hard to make sure the music reached a high tempo when tension increased; I think this was a good input from Liam as it really made tension build and helped bring our thriller to life. Actor’s names are important in the titles because they play a big role in the production of the film as without any actors there would be no film. The names of the actors are also used in the opening titles to tell the audience who is in the thriller and it can help give the audience an idea of what to expect as they can make connotations with the actors from other thrillers/films they are associated with.
To create our titles for our thriller we waited until editing to perfect them. We did use pieces of paper with the names of people in our thriller and these didn’t need much work in the editing stage. Although the main title and our production logo was done with after effects and added into our thriller. For our production company logo we worked hard in after effects by creating a pulsating transition as we felt it fit in with our thriller due to the unnerving of the thriller. We also used the same idea with the main title of DrIvE as we wanted the letters R and V to fade or flash in and out so we could have the words DIE on the screen due to the nature of the thriller the assumption that most audience members would create is that the victim will eventually die.
When coming up with an idea for our thriller we took inspiration from the TV series ‘DEXTER’ and took our inspiration from there excellent opening sequence. We used the technique of using a daily routine look sinister and also attempted to use the music in the same way by using high tempo and sinister sounds in the more violent scenes. Although we didn’t want to use the whole theme of ‘DEXTER’ we want to put our own mark onto the film. We did this by introducing flashbacks and jump cuts into our productions. These showed flashes of violence and links to the daily routine which made it unique and shows differences from ‘DEXTER’.
