Psycho analysis

How have camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene been used in the ‘Psycho’ shower scene to build tension?

The camerawork in this shot is effective as the frame shows a close up of the victim in the shower and also shows the killer behind the curtain. The camera shot helps build tension with the audience as they can see the killer’s outline through the curtain. This shot is effective as it shows the woman in the shower, totally oblivious to what’s going on. The unclear image seen of the killer is effective as it’s hiding the identity of the killer. It helps build tension amongst the audience as they can sense something bad is about to happen but the victim doesn’t and it will make the audience feel helpless and un-easy. The camera shot is a 3rd person’s perspective to show the audience the surroundings of the woman and builds tension as they can see the unaware victim and the killer in sight.

At this point of the film the editing is slow paced as the action hasn’t begun, the slow paced editing is effective when building tension because the slower the editing the longer the audience are left tense and on edge waiting for events to unfold. The shots will be straight cuts as the action is all in the same location and straight cuts can add to the tension as they can be quite sharp cuts which reflect the scene as a sharp knife is what kills the woman.

The setting of the shot will build tension amongst the audience as it is an everyday room which most people watching the film will use; this will create nerves amongst the audience as they will feel nervous thinking about their homes and the insecurity they have when in their bathrooms. The costume of the victim in this shot is important, although she isn’t wearing anything it is still important, that is because her naked body shows her lack of protection and shows her insecurity which will build tension amongst the audience because the audience know what’s about to happen and they can see she has nothing to protect her.

The diegetic sound in this shot will be of the shower running, this is important as it makes the victim unaware of noises going on around her in the house, it helps with hiding the identity of the killer. The victim won’t hear the sound of the killer as the water is drowning out that sound. The non-diegetic sound will be the sound of the music added into the scene, this will create tension and the music is vital for a thriller movie to add to the tension and make the audience un-easy. The music at this point would be slow but building up to a crescendo, when the music will go higher and louder when the killer begins the murder.

This shot is a point of view shot of the victim being killed by the killer; the shot is a 3rd person’s point of view as we can see both actors in the shot. The high angle shot shows the lack of power for the victim, as the audience we feel we have more power than her as she is insecure and lifeless. Also the high angle shot shows her legs beginning to weaken, we see life passing away. Both of the actors are framed in this shot, the bar of the shower curtain still hides the face of the killer, hiding her identity. With both of the actors in shot it helps give the audience an idea of the killer.

At this point of the film the editing will be fast paced to show the severity of the murder. This will create tension as the fast paced will un-ease the audience and make them nervous as it reflects the brutality of the murder. Also the non-diegetic sound of the music will be similar to the editing speed as the music will have reached the crescendo and the music will be high pitch and fast; this creates tension as it puts fear into the audience. Also the non-diegetic sound of the knife piercing the victim skin has been added to show the severity and add emphasis to the murder.

The setting of the shower will also make the audience un-easy as it is in an everyday location it will make the audience fearful of their own bathrooms. The costume of the victim is still the same, and backs up what the audience felt and thought, how she’s insecure as she has not clothes to protect her. The make up here you can look at the victims nail varnish which is red and has connotation with blood which can be linked to her murder, and the red nail varnish can be a sign of danger. The major prop in this scene is obviously the knife, which would create tension towards the audience as everyone knows what a knife is capable of and it will strike fear into the audience.

The gender of the victim is also important as woman as mostly stereotyped as the weaker gender and the victim here is a woman who will create tension for the audience as they know a woman isn’t represented as a strong character and isn’t a gender known for defending themselves.

This shot is effective as it shows the victims house, the extreme long shot of the house is effective in showing the weather surrounding the house. This is known as pathetic fallacy as the weather reflects the action in the film. The thunder storm reflects the horrendous action that has just unfolded. At this point of the scene the editing would have slowed down and the non-diegetic sound of the music would have slowed down and also the tension amongst the audience would have turned into shock and nerves as the scene turns back to normality.
